What are the differences between open and closed adoption?

In a closed adoption there is no direct contact between the adoptive family and the birth family. There may be mediated contact in which information is shared through an intermediary such as an agency or an attorney. These types of arrangements are sometimes called semi-open, but without direct contact this type of adoption is still considered closed.
